Hearing reports that trouble in Quthing is becoming more serious, and concerned about the safety of his three trading stations, Joseph Thomas has cut short his visit to the Cape Colony and returned to Quthing.

At the trading station near Masitise, Thomas seizes the reins of a couple of pack horses and ties them together. He will take them to his trading station near Raisa’s village and pack his most valuable goods on them. He has heard enough to concern him, and he wants to save at least some of the goods that represent his livelihood should fighting break out.

He sets off, riding past the vacated magistracy and on to the bridle path along the steep slopes of the Orange River to his shop near Raisa’s village.
